Live: Aqua

Unless you were living under a rock during the 90s, or if you simply weren’t even born yet, chances are you would have heard of popular eurodance band Aqua. This Danish group became famous with hits such as Roses Are Red and Barbie Girl with the latter being their breakthrough single that brought them into the spotlight.

This concert was the first time I ever experienced DJs as the supporting act and after jamming to Teen Spirit for an hour, it made me wonder why this was such a rarity since they managed to bring the whole crowd to their feet as they played classic 90s music including Vengaboys and The Backstreet Boys. By the time Aqua came on, the whole theatre was almost packed with people, both young and old, who were ready to party it up to some 90s nostalgia.

There were a few microphone glitches as Aqua came on-stage but that was soon fixed and the rest of the night went on without a hitch. It was surprising how many elements of their original songs they managed to change on-stage since they produced rockier versions of their tracks and, at one point, they even brought out some house music to the crowd’s enjoyment.

Bringing out classic hits such as My Oh My and Around the World, it was impossible to be bored at the concert. The theatre went off when Aqua finally broke into Barbie Girl and it was a satisfied crowd going home that night when the band said their good-bye’s. If there’s one band that any fan of eurodance should see live, it’s Aqua.
